February 9-10-11. Washington DC, Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP 2017). As usual, we’ll have a table where you can come by and meet us, grab a copy of Writing War: A Guide to Telling Your Own Story, or our literary journal O-Dark-Thirty. We’ll be at table 428T. You’ll also find books by our editors and instructors for sale. Our founder, Ron Capps, is on a panel on Saturday afternoon titled Writing War, Teaching Craft: Veterans and Cadets in the Creative Writing Classroom.

February 22. Lexington VA, Virginia Military Institute. VWP director Ron Capps will read from his memoir Seriously Not All Right: Five Wars in Ten Years and discuss writing with VMI cadets, faculty, and guests. Contact Professor Mary Stewart Atwell for more information:

April 5. Baltimore MD, Johns Hopkins University. Ron Capps will accept the Johns Hopkins University Foreign Affairs Society’s Anne Smedinghoff Award for the Veterans Writing Project. Contact JHUFAS for more information:

April 29. College Park MD, Books Alive 2017: The 5th Annual Washington Writers Conference, sponsored by the Washington Independent Review of Books. Ron Capps will join a panel discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winners David Finkel and Steve Twomey. FMI: Visit the WIROB page and scroll down.

September 21-23. Deadwood, SD. VWP director Ron Capps will appear at the South Dakota Festival of Books. Ron will take part in workshops, panel discussions, and film screenings. See the festival website for more information.

Fall 2017. Rockville, MD. A writer’s workshop taught by Dario DiBattista in conjunction with our partners at the Montgomery County Public Library (MCPL). Taking place at the Rockville branch of the MCPL on six consecutive Saturdays from 1-3pm beginning September 30th and running through November 4th.  Participants will create new works in the workshop and share their work among the group to receive feedback from peers and from the facilitator. October 7-8. Saratoga Springs NY, Empire State College. Our two-day Open Seminar. Open to any veteran, any service member, and any of their adult family members. Contact Ryan Smithson for more information:

October 26-27-28. Buffalo NY. Department of Veterans Affairs National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Ron Capps will lead a two day workshop for the winners of the creative arts festival’s writing contest.

November 4-5. Outer Banks, NC. Our annual collaboration with the Dare County Arts Council. This year we’ll present a two-day memoir focused workshop led by Jerri Bell. For more information contact Chris Sawin of the Dare County Arts Council:

November 30. Baltimore, MD. A reading focused on the war in Vietnam by VWP members and friends. At the Anchor Southeast Library 3601 Eastern Avenue, 6:30pm.
